Contribute to the Global Water Forum Website
The Global Water Forum publishes informed and verifiable perspectives on local, regional, and global water issues from all geographic areas, academic disciplines, and types of profession. The aim is to provide reliable, accessible, and informed insights of water issues, communicated in a way which facilitates the broadest possible understanding.
In support of this aim the GWF encourages readers to share their experiences in the water sector by contributing* short, fully referenced articles to the site discussing their work or point of view. Please submit your article to editor@globalwaterforum.org using this template and following the guidelines below.
These are the main types of articles which we publish on the site:
- Research pieces – summaries or overviews of water-related academic research undertaken by contributors (example).
- Project pieces – open discussions of water projects describing successes, failures, and challenges etc. (example).
- Opinion pieces – insightful, evidence based commentary on current and contentious water issues (example).
- Explanatory pieces – accessible, easy to understand explanations of difficult topics and concepts across the water sciences (example). Explanatory pieces are very popular with readers!
- New! Perspectives pieces- thought-provoking reflections based on lived experiences, long-term retrospective views or on-the-ground expertise (example).
In order to ensure that the Global Water Forum operates at the highest possible standards, and provides reliable, evidence based articles, we have a number of strict criteria that must be met by submissions:
- Articles should be between 800-1200 words.
- Articles should reference at least three verifiable sources in support of their arguments, at least one of which must be peer-reviewed.
- Articles should be written in excellent English with no significant, or repeated, spelling or grammatical errors.
- Articles should be original pieces of work regarding water issues (while all contributions must be original, articles based on your own academic research that has already been published are encouraged).
- Please use SI and Metric units, not Imperial.
- Indicate the currency if citing monetary values/ costs (e.g. USD, AUD, etc )
- Cite references using the Chicago style footnote/bibliography referencing system.
- Use this template to set up your document.
Additional guidance for Perspectives pieces:
- You are welcome share your own personal experiences and views in a Perspectives piece.
- However, assertions about factual matters should be backed up by sources/ references.
- If a claim is based on an anecdote or eye-witness account, this should be clear to the reader from the text.
- For example, the statement ‘It was the worst flood in the region’s history,’ should reference a reputable source, such as a government weather database. However, the statement, ‘farmers in the region told me it was the worst flood they had experienced,’ does not need a reference.
- How to start? Consider these writing prompts: what is your relationship with this water place? Why is it important to you? What are the immediate problems you see/ experience? What are the alternatives? How could things change for the better? What are you aspirations for the future of the water place?
Once GWF has received your submission GWF will let you know if it meets the criteria and if any changes need to be made (for some submissions we may ask you to revise and resubmit). Once approved we will upload the article to the site.
If you do not want to submit a full piece of your own but would like to contribute to the debate over a particular issue, or if you have any questions that you feel are not answered within an article, GWF encourages readers to submit comments and feedback on existing contributions. GWF also welcome your suggestions as to what issues and topics you think should be discussed and what resources we could provide that would be of use to you.
*GWF exists because of the generous time volunteered by our authors. We have chosen not to monetise this site and consequently , contributors are not remunerated.
