Job Opportunity// Postdoc vacancies including on Gender: Building sustainable biomass value chains in Southern Africa

Job Description:

The new EU Horizon 2020 funded Steam Bio Africa project (Innovative Large-Scale Production of Affordable Clean Burning Solid Biofuel and Water in Southern Africa: transforming bush encroachment from a problem into a secure and sustainable energy source) is now hiring three Post Doc Research Fellows to be based at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (with two more to come at Namibia University of Science and Technology). The project will be implemented in three countries: Namibia, Botswana, and RSA.

1) One PostDoc will join the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Team led by the Department of Urban and Rural Development at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. This research fellow will implement gender transformative approaches (GTA) in the targeted communities and collect and analyse data on the GESI impact of the new biofuel and its associated value chain. More information on this opportunity can be found here. Applications are due on 22 August.

2) One PostDoc will join the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Team led by the Department of Energy and Technology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. This research fellow will quantify and assess the social impacts from a system perspective when establishing new bio-based value chains in Southern Africa using social LCA and other methods for social sustainability assessment. More information on the social LCA opportunity can be found here. Applications are due on 15 August.

3) One more PostDoc will join the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Team led by the Department of Energy and Technology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. This research fellow will quantify and assess the environmental and economic impacts using LCA. More information on the environmental and economic LCA opportunity can be found here. Applications are due on 15 August.

4) One more Gender Equality and Social Inclusion PostDoc opportunity will soon open at Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). It will soon be posted here.

5) One more Life Cycle Assessment PostDoc opportunity will soon open at Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). It will soon be posted here

SteamBioAfrica is an international and interdisciplinary research project that will convert invasive bush into clean burning biofuel, water and chemicals through superheated steam processing. This way SteamBioAfrica will enable the production and marketing of clean, secure, and affordable energy as well as create jobs related to this new biofuel value chain in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. It addresses multiple challenges facing Southern Africa such as bush encroachment, climate change impacts, resource use inefficiency, unsustainably produced fuel, smoke and air pollutant induced disease, unemployment and poverty.
