The University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, UK seeks to appoint a highly motivated individual to join the internationally-leading Water Sciences research theme within the School of Geography, Earth & Environmental Sciences. This person will contribute to the creation of new knowledge by undertaking collaborative research in the fields of hydrology-climate-land-people interactions, river and stream temperature and high frequency water quality sensing (primarily) as well as wider hydrology, hydro climatology and ecohydrology.
The successful candidate will have a good publication record and the technical skills to deliver innovative science by using state-of-the- art methods (e.g. numerical modelling, remote sensing, statistical tools, laboratory and/ or field experimentation). The appointee will be involved in some administrative tasks to support: delivery on current research projects, research impact generation and tracking, and the preparation of new research proposals. S/he will demonstrate strong initiative and excellent teamwork skills.
Responsibilities:
- The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.
- Develop research objectives and proposals for joint research with Professor David M. Hannah
- Contribute to writing bids for research funding with Professor David M. Hannah
- Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods: scientific experimentation, literature reviews etc.
- Analyze and interpret data
- Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
- Disseminate research findings for publication in international journals and other outlets
- Support delivery of research impact generation and tracking
- Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
- Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
- Undertake management/administration arising from research
- Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
- Aid in supervising doctoral students on research related work as appropriate with input from Professor David M. Hannah
- Provide guidance, as required, to support staff who may be assisting with the research with input from Professor David M. Hannah
- Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadline
Scope of the Role:
- Work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to writing bids with input from Professor David M. Hannah
- Operate within area of specialism: hydrology, hydro climatology and/or hydro ecology/ ecohydrology
- Analyze and interpret research findings and results
- Support delivery of research impact generation and tracking
Skills and Experience:
- First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
- High level analytical capability
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly
- Fluency in relevant techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new approaches
- Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
- Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
