Advocacy plays an important role in creating and sustaining momentum for progress on conservation and human health policies. While multi-sectoral initiatives have been gaining attention in recent years, there are still many policy platforms that fail to recognize the critical links between human and ecosystem health. This includes a comprehensive water policy that links freshwater ecosystem conservation with water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) planning and infrastructure maintenance.
In 2020, the African Biodiversity Collaborative Group, Conservation International, and IRC launched the Freshwater Conservation and WASH Advocacy Strategy Workshop Facilitator’s Guide. In addition, IRC launched WASH Systems Academy online, virtual course Advocacy for Universal WASH Services. These two resources combined inspired the creation of a blended learning course that combines facilitated virtual instruction with self-guided activities, group discussions, and feedback labs to build the capacity of individuals working on WASH and ecosystems implementing programs.
This course lays out steps for conservation, health, and development practitioners to develop an advocacy strategy to design messaging and activities to urge donors, policymakers, and colleagues of the need to unite and join forces for conservation and health. Advocacy is a critical step in enabling integrated freshwater conservation-WASH management and must be closely tied to ongoing stakeholder engagement and field implementation of freshwater management strategies.
