DESCRIPTION:This session will look at examples of the ‘circular economy’ paradigm being adopted by water and sanitation operators in different contexts. Worldwide water operators have been implementing wastewater reclamation. A host of technological options from “high” to “low” tech and centralized to decentralized technologies exists\, but most are yet to be tested. Still\, a host of technical\, socio-cultural\, economic\, governance\, financial instruments etc. need to be understood. As such\, water reclamation with integrated resource recovery can be a key element in enhancing water\, energy and food security. Further\, visualizing revenue streams emerging from this process can form the basis for an innovative governance model geared towards more effective resource management and supporting resilience and transition to a circular economy. It will discuss how the imperative to reduce and reuse water and related energy and material resources is changing water and sanitation utilities’ modus operandi - their economic models\, structure\, governance and collaborations. SUMMARY:BACK TO THE NATURE: Exploring the potential of nature-based solutions to face the effects of climate change on water
DESCRIPTION:In its latest report\, published in August 2021\, the IPCC rings the alarm on the predicted consequences of global warming of 1.5C\, which is expected to be reached by 2040\, including on water with the increase of extreme events\, more intense rainfall and droughts. Effects have already been seen throughout the summer of 2021 with fires and floods devastating Europe. \nWith increasing rainfall\, the question of rainwater management must be addressed. Water operators have been at the center of discussions\, as they manage sewer networks and treat works to prevent pollution of water bodies. However\, as existing systems are showing their limits in the face of new challenges\, it is critical to seek new long-term looking solutions. \nParticularly relevant in the context of the revision of the European Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive\, the conference will aim to discuss the consequences of climate change on the water cycle and the role that nature-based solutions can play in addressing storm water and strengthening the resilience of cities and towns. The ENI CBC Med Programme will be involved in the session “Racing to 1.5°: cities implementing evidence-based climate & energy action in Europe & Mediterranean”\, scheduled on 9 of November (6.30 pm-7.30 pm\, CEST)\, which aims to highlight the efforts of local governments and stakeholders in Europe and across the Mediterranean in accelerating climate action. The discussion will showcase impact-driven success stories of cities and local actors in climate and energy plans and concrete measures towards a resilient\, climate neutral future. \nThe session is organized in partnership with the Global/Europe Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy – the largest alliance for city climate leadership across the globe; Clima-Med – the EU-funded project which supports the transition of eight partner countries in the Southern Neighbourhood towards sustainable\, low-carbon and climate-resilient development; and the Italian Municipality of Segrate\, a town of over 35\,000 inhabitants located in the Metropolitan City of Milan. There are no restrictions about how you make your video – you can talk to the camera\, use props\, incorporate animations\, etc. The goal is to demonstrate scientific journalistic skills and creativity. Participants will be evaluated based on the relevance to SDGs and FEW nexus\, messaging and communication\, creativity\, and video and editing quality. \nAll video submissions must be received by 5:00pm EST on Monday\, November 8\, 2021. The project’s specific objectives are to create an enabling environment that will drive cross-sectoral engagement and implementation of nexus investment projects that contribute to enhancing water\, food\, and energy security in the SADC region. The project began in 2017 and is being implemented in two phases. \nBased on the successful outcomes of Phase 1\, the SADC Nexus Project has now transitioned into Phase II. This phase will consolidate and build on the achievements of Phase I\, with the overall objective being to institutionalize the WEF Nexus approach at regional and national governance structures and to support investment decisions for water\, energy and food security in the SADC region. SUMMARY:Convene a Session at the Virtual Africa Water and Sanitation Week: Call for Expression of Interest
DESCRIPTION:The 8th Africa Water Week (AWW-8) and the 6th AfricaSan will be held virtually from November 22-26\, 2021. The two events (8th Africa Water Week and 6th AfricaSan) will jointly be organized and convened under the auspices of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) in conjunction with the African Union Commission. The Government of Namibia in collaboration with other development partners\, will host the events. \nCall for Session Conveners \nInterested Organizations are invited to convene seminar sessions under the sub themes. The seminars will revolve around the following strategic insights and promote sharing lessons learned\, bringing forth innovative solutions and proffering ideas on impactful actions that need to be imbibed\, up-scaled and improved on to reach required progress and sustainability. Session conveners will\, however\, be required to make a supporting contribution of 1\,500.00 USD for each technical session. A discount will be considered for local CBOs/CSOs\, SMEs\, local governments/districts whose session is focused on breakthrough innovations that will contribute new knowledge to the sector. DESCRIPTION:The 8th Africa Water Week (AWW8) and the 6th Africa Conference on Sanitation and Hygiene (AfricaSan6) are being jointly organized this year as a virtual conference on 22-26 November. Joined together as the Africa Water and Sanitation Week (AWSW)\, the conference is convened by the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) in conjunction with the African Union Commission and organized with other development partners. \nThe AWSW will be convened under unprecedented circumstances. From the beginning of the year 2020\, the world including Africa has been hit by a public health emergency: the outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) across Africa and all over the world\, and hence introducing a new dynamic in the challenges faced by the water sector. \nThe unpredictability of public health pandemics and the role of water\, sanitation and hygiene in response and mitigation efforts introduces a completely new complexity to the sector. The COVID-19 pandemic affects the sector both directly and indirectly. \nThe Africa Water Week and AfricaSan are Africa’s flagship water and sanitation events and represent a political commitment at the highest level. DESCRIPTION:The objective of the virtual workshop is to update participants on recent Nexus Cluster initiatives. Projects that have started in the previous year will be presented\, and emerging nexus-related research topics introduced and discussed. \nThe workshop will provide a platform for high-level interaction and project groups to exchange their experiences. Additional discussion points include the Nexus in the context of relevant policy domains in the European Union\, e.g.\, the Green Deal\, European Climate Action\, Biodiversity Strategy and the Farm to Fork Strategy under the framework of Horizon Europe. \nThe workshop aims to bring together partners and interested individuals and groups from different fields to engage in innovative discussions and gather input and feedback. SUMMARY:Reporting on climate change complexity in the Mediterranean region
DESCRIPTION:Mediterranean countries are facing a set of complex and interrelated challenges that are increasing climate change vulnerability of the region – many of which are directly related to water\, energy and food production\, distribution and use. These three elements are inextricably linked. Water is used for energy production\, and energy is the dominant cost factor in providing water and wastewater services. Energy is needed for land conversion\, construction and transportation\, and energy and water are needed for agricultural productivity. Land is required for water\, energy and food production but is becoming increasingly scarce. \n\n\n\nThe region’s rapid rate of urbanization and population growth – specially in coastal areas – is increasing the demand of these resources. The vulnerable coast must cope with relentless urban pressure coupled with the rising impacts of climate change. Coastal zones are faced with the grim prospect of erosion and the salinization of river deltas and aquifers that underpin livelihoods and food security. \n\n\n\nWithin the celebration of the first Mediterranean Day\, this session aims to explain the basis of the interconnection between water\, energy\, food and ecosystems – the so-called WEFE Nexus – when reporting about climate change. The WEFE Nexus is an approach that integrates management and governance across the multiple sectors of food\, energy\, water\, and ecosystems. The Nexus corroborates the need to not view water\, energy\, food and ecosystems as being separate entities\, but rather a complex and inextricably entwined. \n\n\n\nThe session will spell out with day-to-day examples how to embed that approach in the journalistic reporting when covering climate change. SUMMARY:The 4th Mediterranean Water Forum 2021
DESCRIPTION:Between the 6th and 8th December 2021\, the Energy and Water Agency (EWA) of Malta\, in collaboration with the Mediterranean Water Institute (IME) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM)\, shall be hosting the 4th Mediterranean Water Forum in Malta. Initiated in Marrakech in 2011\, the Mediterranean Water Forum is intended to be a regional event that brings together the main stakeholders in the Mediterranean water community to exchange water management solutions amongst each other. The main outcomes of the forum will then be presented during the 9th World Water Forum\, which will be held in March 2022\, in Dakar. \nComplementing the theme of the 4th Mediterranean Water Forum\, the NAWAMED project shall be organizing the 2nd Mediterranean Water Table on the 8th December 2021. During the meeting\, NAWAMED project partners\, together with associated partners and stakeholders will discuss the issues and solutions related to non-conventional water resource technologies and water demand management techniques that have been identified during the 1st two national water tables\, organized around the partners’ Countries (Italy\, Tunisia\, Lebanon and Jordan). \nThis cycle of water tables\, at National and Mediterranean level\, will then lead to the development of a holistic Mediterranean Policy Document that could be used as guidance for national and regional policy development by other neighboring Med countries. \nStay tuned for more information!
