Africa has to face the pandemic with a fragile healthcare system and urban organisation characterised by overcrowded slums\, where social distancing is practically impossible. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe other face of the pandemic is the dramatic economic consequence\, empathised by a situation where 600 million people live in poverty and with no access to energy.  Due to the Covid-19 crisis\, the African economy is suffering by its dependency to other economies\, by the collapse of commodity prices and for shutdown of the activities in response to the lockdown measures. \nThe renewable energy sector can play a fundamental role in the fight against Covid-19’s disastrous effects. Access to reliable and sustainable energy is a crucial need at all times\, and becomes even more important for supporting essential services during a global crisis. In a period of extreme crisis such as the one we are experiencing\, ensuring a continuous flow of electricity is essential to keep the strategic infrastructures of the countries alive. It is also a stimulus measure to boost the economic recovery\, addressing short-term challenges as well as the longer-term structural shift towards a low-carbon economy. \nThe study\, developed by the RES4Africa Foundation and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in partnership with SDA Bocconi and with the support of Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) and Ethiopian Women in Energy (EWiEn)\, aims to explore the impact of Covid-19 on the African economies and their energy sector. The study also analyses the role of renewable energy in the post-Covid phase\, providing policy recommendations to sustain the growth in a new sustainable equilibrium. \nThanks to the partnership with local stakeholders such as SAPP and EWiEn\, and thanks to the broader experience and knowhow of UNECA and SDA Bocconi\, the study builds on reliable and accurate data. \n©RES4Africa Foundation

For its operationalisation\, the nexus approach challenges existing structures\, policies and procedures at regional and national levels and hence\, needs to overcome various barriers. There has been progress in developing knowledge\, frameworks and tools on operationalising the nexus in Southern Africa and this has undoubtedly been affected by the rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic since late 2019. WaterNet\, WRC\, UKZN\, IHE-DELFT\, GWP-SA and ARC have also been planning around capacity development and knowledge management to be part of the next phase of the WEF nexus agenda in Southern Africa. The momentum in WEF nexus research\, capacity development and dialogues has undoubtedly been impacted by shifting priorities towards health\, nationwide lockdowns and changes in working environments. There is therefore a need to have an in-depth discussion on how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the WEF Nexus in the SADC Region. Such an analysis will help in identifying gaps or opportunities within the nexus that can be taken forward post the pandemic. The speakers are all working on different aspects of the WEF nexus and will deliver different perspectives on how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted their WEF nexus agenda.

The review of the draft scoping report of the transformative change assessment (thematic assessment of the underlying causes of biodiversity loss\, determinants of transformative change and options for achieving the 2050 vision for biodiversity) will follow shortly: from 3 July to 28 August 2020. A virtual dialogue meeting for national focal points to support them in reviewing the drafts will be held from 6 to 10 July 2020\, as announced in notification EM/2020/17. \nIn addition\, all interested stakeholders are invited to participate in a webinar\, during which scoping experts will present the draft scoping reports and discuss clarifications on the reports in response to questions from participants. The webinar will be held on 14 July 2020\, 15:00 – 16:45 CEST in the context of IPBES’ work on capacity-building and stakeholder engagement (objectives 2 and  5 of the IPBES work programme up to 2030). \n  \n

The first session will be held on June 11\, 2020 at 13:00-14:00 UTC. \nAbout\nFarmer-led irrigation development (FLI) has gained increased attention by government institutions\, development and implementation partners as one of the potential solutions to build climate resilience for smallholder farmers and transform food systems to support healthy diets for all. Furthermore\, the knock-on effects of health-related disasters such as the Covid-19 pandemic on market disruptions impacting food and nutrition security\, enforces the urgency to increase multiple purpose water access and increase local community resilience. \nThe question arises on how we can accelerate sustainable scaling of FLI given the challenges of underdeveloped irrigation supply chains\, high upfront costs and lack finance/business models\, lack or underdeveloped markets and agricultural value chains (especially for high value crops)\, gender and social inclusion gaps in access to and benefits from FLI\, and limited water resource governance. \nThe International Water Management Institute (IWMI) together with the World Bank\, The Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute and the Global Water Partnership (GWP) are hosting a virtual mini-series to discuss key issues and identify a way forward for operationalizing sustainable and inclusive scaling of farmer-led irrigation development. DESCRIPTION:Details\nLecturer: Dr. Serena Caucci (Senior Research Associate\, UNU-FLORES) \nEvent date: 27 April 2020 at 14:50-16:20 ONLINE \nRegister Here \nAbout\nA sustainable development that integrates the environmental\, social\, and economic dimensions has been the pillar for the introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for promoting sustainable policy actions. This lecture will look into the relevance of water reuse in the circular economy for both the Global North and Global South and will highlight synergies and trade-offs within sustainable water management. Sustainability assessments are tools that can support proper management and translation of knowledge into policy actions. Sustainability assessment of water reuse\, especially in agriculture\, could be a valuable tool to support the achievement of SDG 6 and 12 considering that agriculture accounts for 70 per cent of the worldwide water abstraction. Unfortunately\, sustainability assessment often differs in theory and practice. This lecture will highlight the relevance of water reuse in the circular economy globally and will review the congruency of sustainability assessment in theory and practice. In detail\, this presentation we will focus on the dimensionality of the assessments\, the boundary in which sustainability indicators are applied\, and the gaps for a truly holistic approach will be highlighted. The lecture will also discuss the demo-geography of the regions in which water reuse is applied in agriculture and whether local needs could affect the sustainability assessment criteria. Paths towards the use of a standard but flexible integrated indicator-based assessment methods for sustainable water reuse will be explored. The establishment of a standard set of holistic sustainability indicator factors could be the initial step forward to test sustainability assessment of water reuse in agriculture globally thus contributing to the achievement of the SDGs. \nNexus Seminar Series\n\n\nUNU-FLORES\, in collaboration with PRISMA – Centre for Sustainability Assessment and Policy on behalf of TU Dresden\, is delighted to present the Nexus Seminar Series. The joint seminar series\, which launched in 2015\, features lectures by senior scholars that highlight all dimensions of research on the Nexus Approach\, ranging from hands-on implementation strategies to theoretical debates. The Nexus Seminars serve not only as a platform for scientific exchange and cooperation between UNU-FLORES and TU Dresden but also a medium for the partner institutions to discuss their research with a broader audience. DESCRIPTION:About\nPresenter: Thomas Jayne\, University Foundation Professor of Agriculture\, Food\, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University \nThe rise of medium-scale farms in Africa is affecting the region in diverse ways that are difficult to generalize. Many such farms are a source of technical change and commercialization of African agriculture; they attract agribusiness investment and improve market access conditions for all nearby smallholders. However\, medium-scale land acquisitions may exacerbate land scarcity in favorable rural areas\, raise land prices\, and crowd out young peoples’ access to land for farming. While much more research is necessary to effectively guide African governments\, our findings indicate that medium-scale commercialized farms can be a dynamic driver of agricultural transformation but this does not reduce the importance of agricultural ministries maintaining a clear commitment to supporting smallholder farms. DESCRIPTION:Strategic Networks and Initiatives Program (SNIP) Fall Speakers Series \nOn October 8th\, Penn State hosted Christopher Scott for seminar titled: “Sustaining Groundwater Irrigation in Breadbasket Regions: A Water-Energy-Food Nexus Diagnostic Assessment” \nProf. Scott serves as Director of the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy\, Professor of Geography and Development\, and Director of the Consortium for Arizona-Mexico Arid Environments – all at the University of Arizona.  He is founding co-director of the AQUASEC Center of Excellence for Water Security. He was a 2018-19 Leshner Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science\, focusing on water-energy-food security. He earned PhD and MS degrees at Cornell University and BS and BA degrees at Swarthmore College.  His research and engagement are concentrated in the Southwest US\, Mexico\, and India\, as well as Chile\, Argentina\, Brazil\, Peru\, and Nepal. The FEWSION project is a Big Data Fusion project to create and explore the first mesoscale map of the U.S. food\, energy\, and water (+everything) system.
