SUMMARY:UNFSS Independent Dialogue in Egypt: The Role of Water Security for Food Systems Transformations
DESCRIPTION:Date and Time: 19/04/2021 | 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm  (GMT+2) \nMeeting platform: Zoom (Register here) \nDescription: \nWater scarcity remains a key challenge for agricultural development in the MENA region\, including Egypt. Scarcity is rapidly growing as a result of climate change and rapid increases in water demand for other uses. Considering that Egypt’s agri-food system provided critical cushioning for economic growth\, jobs\, and household income negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic\, it is paramount that more consideration is given to the important role of water security for Egypt’s food systems. With agriculture utilizing over 80% of Egypt’s water resources\, meeting these challenges will require bold actions and new mindsets directed at water and food systems transformations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. \nJoin us for an Independent Dialogue convened in partnership between the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)\, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) to discuss the role of Water Security for Food Systems Transformation in Egypt. Insights emerging from this multi-stakeholder dialogue will be presented to the United Nations Food System Summit (UNFSS) in September 2021. Transforming #foodsystems is among the most powerful ways to make progress towards all 17 #SDGS. \nThis dialogue will discuss the importance of water security for all aspects of Egypt’s food systems\, with a focus on equity\, inclusion\, capacity\, innovation\, and sustainability\, including insights on how food systems need to change to improve water security (SDG 6)\, help eliminate hunger (SGD2)\, support energy security (SDG 7)\, improve climate adaptation and mitigation action (SDG 13) and help retain all life on land (SDG 15). \nThis pre-UNFSS2021 session\, therefore\, seeks to unpack the question: What is the role of water in transforming Egypt’s food systems for improved water and food security and environmental sustainability?  Speakers and panelists from Egypt and beyond will engage in interactive group discussions\, collective brainstorming\, and agenda-setting. As Egypt and the MENA region map out the road to UNFSS 2021\, the dialogue will discuss key messages that need to be heard at UNFSS 2021. \nWe invite everyone working to advance transformative water and food systems to join this Dialogue. \nCurators: \nDr. Clemens Breisinger & Dr. Claudia Ringler (IFPRI)\, \nDr. Amgad Elmahdi (IWMI)\, and Dr. Jacques Wery (ICARDA) \nMeeting Agenda: \n\nIntroduction\, scene-setting\, and order of the day by Yumna Kassim\, IFPRI. (3 mins)\nThe Road to UNFSS2021: Achieving water and food security by Joachim von Braun (Chair of the Scientific Group for the UNFSS) – by video. (30 mins)\nPanel discussion on the way forward by a moderator: Claudia Ringler (IFPRI)\, Phil Riddell (Advisor MWRI\, TBC)\, Hammou Laamrani (League of Arab States\, TBC)\, Dina Saleh (IFAD\, TBC)\, Yasser AlShayeb (COEW-AUC\, TBC)\, Hassan Husseiny (Gebal Egypt\, TBC)\, and Farmer representative from TBD.\nWrap-up of key messages and next steps by TBD. (5 mins)\n\nThe Dialogue is expected to gather around 100 participants/stakeholders from Egypt and regional and international partners. Arabic translation will be available\, except in breakout rooms. \nThematic areas for breakout group discussions: \n\nFood and Water Systems in a Changing Climate. Key questions: How can we retain water and food security under climate change in Egypt (and the MENA region)? Do we need to change or expand water sources\, change commodities\, sustainable development\, multi-functional and benefits infrastructure\, governance beyond water (nexus governance)\, etc.?\nPolicy Coherence and Institutional Coordination across Water and Food Security in Egypt. Key questions: What practical steps can/should be taken to ensure policy coherence and institutional coordination to jointly improve water and food security in Egypt to meet future needs? Are policy/institutional set-ups encouraging partnerships and investments by the private sector?\nEquity Considerations in access to affordable Water and Food. Key questions: How can we improve equity in access to water and food and nutrition security for the poorest? Are current government policies adequate? Do we need to go beyond water and food policy to nexus policy?\nDigitally informed Climate-Smart Solutions for Agri-Food Transformation in Egypt. Key questions: Have we fully explored all technological\, innovative\, and agronomic solutions to improve water and agricultural productivity in Egypt’s food production systems? Are we producing the right agricultural commodities (including livestock and fisheries)? How can we eliminate water pollution in Egypt? Produce more with less water and energy? Are we adopting and investing in the right digital Climate-Smart Agriculture?\nFood System Efficiency beyond Production for a Greener and More Resilient Future? Key questions: What actions are needed to improve food systems beyond production\, along the value chain\, with no harm to natural resources? This includes water use in food processing\, preparation\, transportation\, retailing\, and consumption. This also includes the role of water in international and regional trade.\nFood Systems Changes for improved Water Security. Key question: How can we change Egypt’s food systems to support all aspects of SDG 6 on clean water and sanitation? This could include changing diets\, changing food processing practices\, de-risking agricultural systems\, redesigning the farming system\, eco-nexus farming?\n\nCheck out to learn more about the UNFSS Dialogues.

SUMMARY:The WEF Nexus in Africa Initiative joins webinar series
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with FAO\, SEI\, and KTH\, we are co-hosting a series of webinars over the course of the year related to WEF nexus issues. In addition to ones already scheduled\, on April 13 we will host a session on “The WEF Nexus in practice: multi-scalar case studies and a WEF Nexus Index” with speakers Janez Susnik (IHE Delft)\, Sara Masia\, (IHE Delft)\, and Gareth Simpson (Jones and Wagener). This webinar will discuss WEF nexus model development\, an ongoing WEF-Tools project\, and a globally applicable WEF Nexus Index. \nDate and Time \nApril 13th\, 13:00–14:30 GMT+2 \nDetailed Description \nThe webinar will present three perspectives of about 20 minutes each\, aiming to demonstrate the WEF Nexus in practice. The first comes from the recent SIM4NEXUS project (www.sim4nexus.eu)\, showing the process of complex WEF nexus model development in the EU\, including the incorporation of policies\, and the development of online WEF nexus serious games. The second\, from the ongoing WEF-Tools project (www.wef-tools.un-ihe.org)\, illustrates ongoing\, practically relevant nexus research for the SADC and MENA regions. The final perspective showcases the development of a globally applicable WEF Nexus Index to track nexus performance in a concise\, understandable manner. \nSIM4NEXUS (Janez Susnik\, IHE Delft) \nSIM4NEXUS is a recently-ended EC H2020 project. In this introduction\, the SIM4NEXUS approach to mapping\, modeling\, and understanding the nexus is described. The approach includes nexus policy coherence assessment\, qualitative nexus systems mapping\, quantitative system dynamics modeling\, and development of serious games. SIM4NEXUS applied its approach to 12 case studies in scale from sub-national to global\, and include Sardinia\, Andalusia\, The Netherlands\, Latvia\, Sweden\, two transboundary cases\, and the EU. \nWEF-Tools (Sara Masia\, IHE Delft) \nThe WEF-Tools project aims at qualitatively and quantitatively assessing the WEF nexus in the Songwe River Basin (SRB)\, located on the border between Malawi and Tanzania. Reducing poverty\, improving human health and livelihoods\, ensuring water\, food\, and energy security\, mitigating floods\, and enhancing sustainable river basin management are the main challenges recognized by the SRB Programme (SRBP) jointly developed by the Governments of both countries. The WEF-Tools approach applied in the case study starts from conceptual mapping of the SRB nexus system to the development of quantitative tools such as System Dynamics Models\, and identification of suitable indicators for the assessment of different scenarios\, management strategies\, subsequently providing decision-makers with feasible development pathways. \nWEF Nexus Index (Gareth Simpson\, Jones & Wagener) \nA national-level composite indicator has been developed for 170 nations to provide a quantitative measure of the WEF nexus.  Together with its interactive visualization tool (www.wefnexusindex.org)\, the WEF Nexus Index provides a means for assessing and benchmarking countries regarding integrated resources security.  The tool also provides an entry point into the underlying pillars (water\, energy\, and food)\, sub-pillars (related to access and availability of the resources)\, and the 21 indicators that constitute the composite indicator.  The tool can assist policy- and decision-makers and serves as a measure of a subset of the SDGs. \nFor registration and more details on the webinar\, click here!

SUMMARY:Dialogue on "Transitioning towards a circular economy post Covid-19"
DESCRIPTION:View Webinar Recording Here\nDetails\nTime: 28 July\, 2020 from 9:00am – 12:30pm \nView program details here \nClick here to register \nThe Water Research Commission of South Africa\, in partnership with the Centre for Transformative Agricultural and Food Systems at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Agriculture Research Council (ARC)\, seek to convene a discussion that will set an agenda on developing pathways that build resilience in the water and energy sectors and improve service delivery amongst vulnerable groups lacking access to gridded services \nAbout\nThe Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for polycentric and transformative approaches\, such as nexus planning\, circular economy and scenario planning\, as global and local systems have come under strain. Post Covid-19 interventions to resuscitate economies will require approaches that facilitate resilience building and transitioning towards a circular economy as well as an inclusive green economy. Within the context of the WEF nexus\, there is an urgent need to further unpack the intricate interlinkages between sustainable water and sanitation access and clean renewable energy through transformative approaches for enhanced service delivery\, especially in vulnerable communities that lack gridded services. Even before Covid-19\, nexus planning was being touted as a possible solution to help transition Africa into a more sustainable and resilient society capable of delivering on socio-economic outcomes such as job and employment creation. However\, while nexus planning has been gaining momentum\, a lot of questions still exist as many still do not understand its relevance. Given its importance in the post Covid-19 world\, there is need to unpack nexus planning viz the transitions that it can facilitate in post Covid-19 society

SUMMARY:Webinar: The impact of Covid-19 on Africa’s energy sector
DESCRIPTION:Details\nTitle: The role of renewables to empower a long term and sustainable recovery \nDate: 24th\, June 2020 \n\n\n\n\n\nConcept note \nClick to register \nAbout\nAccording to official data\, the spread of Covid-19 in Africa is lower than in other geographies\, but not less worrying. Africa has to face the pandemic with a fragile healthcare system and urban organisation characterised by overcrowded slums\, where social distancing is practically impossible. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe other face of the pandemic is the dramatic economic consequence\, empathised by a situation where 600 million people live in poverty and with no access to energy.  Due to the Covid-19 crisis\, the African economy is suffering by its dependency to other economies\, by the collapse of commodity prices and for shutdown of the activities in response to the lockdown measures. \nThe renewable energy sector can play a fundamental role in the fight against Covid-19’s disastrous effects. Access to reliable and sustainable energy is a crucial need at all times\, and becomes even more important for supporting essential services during a global crisis. In a period of extreme crisis such as the one we are experiencing\, ensuring a continuous flow of electricity is essential to keep the strategic infrastructures of the countries alive. It is also a stimulus measure to boost the economic recovery\, addressing short-term challenges as well as the longer-term structural shift towards a low-carbon economy. \nThe study\, developed by the RES4Africa Foundation and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in partnership with SDA Bocconi and with the support of Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) and Ethiopian Women in Energy (EWiEn)\, aims to explore the impact of Covid-19 on the African economies and their energy sector. The study also analyses the role of renewable energy in the post-Covid phase\, providing policy recommendations to sustain the growth in a new sustainable equilibrium. \nThanks to the partnership with local stakeholders such as SAPP and EWiEn\, and thanks to the broader experience and knowhow of UNECA and SDA Bocconi\, the study builds on reliable and accurate data. \n©RES4Africa Foundation

SUMMARY:Webinar: Water\, Energy\, and Food Nexus and the COVID-19 Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:View Webinar Recording Here\nAbout\nDate: Tuesday 21 July 2020 \nTime: 10:30 – 12:00 (CAT) \nAccess webinar concept note here \nRegistration link here \nDetails\nThe water energy food (WEF) nexus approach has received growing attention and has been subject to research in Southern Africa. For its operationalisation\, the nexus approach challenges existing structures\, policies and procedures at regional and national levels and hence\, needs to overcome various barriers. There has been progress in developing knowledge\, frameworks and tools on operationalising the nexus in Southern Africa and this has undoubtedly been affected by the rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic since late 2019. WaterNet\, WRC\, UKZN\, IHE-DELFT\, GWP-SA and ARC have also been planning around capacity development and knowledge management to be part of the next phase of the WEF nexus agenda in Southern Africa. The momentum in WEF nexus research\, capacity development and dialogues has undoubtedly been impacted by shifting priorities towards health\, nationwide lockdowns and changes in working environments. There is therefore a need to have an in-depth discussion on how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the WEF Nexus in the SADC Region. Such an analysis will help in identifying gaps or opportunities within the nexus that can be taken forward post the pandemic. The speakers are all working on different aspects of the WEF nexus and will deliver different perspectives on how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted their WEF nexus agenda.

SUMMARY:Webinar Series on Farmer-Led Irrigation Development (FLI)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an exciting\, new webinar series on farmer-led irrigation development (FLI)! The first session will be held on June 11\, 2020 at 13:00-14:00 UTC. \nAbout\nFarmer-led irrigation development (FLI) has gained increased attention by government institutions\, development and implementation partners as one of the potential solutions to build climate resilience for smallholder farmers and transform food systems to support healthy diets for all. Furthermore\, the knock-on effects of health-related disasters such as the Covid-19 pandemic on market disruptions impacting food and nutrition security\, enforces the urgency to increase multiple purpose water access and increase local community resilience. \nThe question arises on how we can accelerate sustainable scaling of FLI given the challenges of underdeveloped irrigation supply chains\, high upfront costs and lack finance/business models\, lack or underdeveloped markets and agricultural value chains (especially for high value crops)\, gender and social inclusion gaps in access to and benefits from FLI\, and limited water resource governance. \nThe International Water Management Institute (IWMI) together with the World Bank\, The Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute and the Global Water Partnership (GWP) are hosting a virtual mini-series to discuss key issues and identify a way forward for operationalizing sustainable and inclusive scaling of farmer-led irrigation development. The webinar series is geared towards practitioners\, policy makers\, private sector and researchers interested in further advancing FLI globally and overcoming the often observed systemic barriers in reaching scale. \nSPEAKERS\nRegassa Namara\, The World Bank Group\nClaudia Sadoff\, International Water Management Institute\nThai Thi Minh\, International Water Management Institute\nNicholas Brozovic\, Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute\nNicole Lefore\, Innovation Laboratory for Small Scale Irrigation\, Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture Development\nSamir Ibrahim\, Sunculture\nPhil Woodhouse\, University of Manchester\, SAFI-network \nFor more information and to register click here

SUMMARY:Nexus Seminar Series - The Second Life of Water: Harnessing Trade-Offs and Synergies
DESCRIPTION:Details\nLecturer: Dr. Serena Caucci (Senior Research Associate\, UNU-FLORES) \nEvent date: 27 April 2020 at 14:50-16:20 ONLINE \nRegister Here \nAbout\nA sustainable development that integrates the environmental\, social\, and economic dimensions has been the pillar for the introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for promoting sustainable policy actions. This lecture will look into the relevance of water reuse in the circular economy for both the Global North and Global South and will highlight synergies and trade-offs within sustainable water management. Sustainability assessments are tools that can support proper management and translation of knowledge into policy actions. Sustainability assessment of water reuse\, especially in agriculture\, could be a valuable tool to support the achievement of SDG 6 and 12 considering that agriculture accounts for 70 per cent of the worldwide water abstraction. Unfortunately\, sustainability assessment often differs in theory and practice. This lecture will highlight the relevance of water reuse in the circular economy globally and will review the congruency of sustainability assessment in theory and practice. In detail\, this presentation we will focus on the dimensionality of the assessments\, the boundary in which sustainability indicators are applied\, and the gaps for a truly holistic approach will be highlighted. The lecture will also discuss the demo-geography of the regions in which water reuse is applied in agriculture and whether local needs could affect the sustainability assessment criteria. Paths towards the use of a standard but flexible integrated indicator-based assessment methods for sustainable water reuse will be explored. The establishment of a standard set of holistic sustainability indicator factors could be the initial step forward to test sustainability assessment of water reuse in agriculture globally thus contributing to the achievement of the SDGs. \nNexus Seminar Series\n\n\nUNU-FLORES\, in collaboration with PRISMA – Centre for Sustainability Assessment and Policy on behalf of TU Dresden\, is delighted to present the Nexus Seminar Series. The joint seminar series\, which launched in 2015\, features lectures by senior scholars that highlight all dimensions of research on the Nexus Approach\, ranging from hands-on implementation strategies to theoretical debates. The Nexus Seminars serve not only as a platform for scientific exchange and cooperation between UNU-FLORES and TU Dresden but also a medium for the partner institutions to discuss their research with a broader audience. Taking place once a month\, each seminar is open to the public and under the current circumstances will be delivered via a virtual Zoom videoconference. Please find all past Nexus Seminars here.

DESCRIPTION:About\n\n\n\n\nTOPIC: Why increasing the role of renewable energy mini-grids is essential to transforming agricultural productivity and food security in Africa \nDiscussion of lessons learnt from policy innovations and programmatic interventions from Tanzania\, Uganda\, and Rwanda \nWELCOME REMARKS : \nDr. Ousmane Badiane\, Malabo Montpellier Panel Co-Chair \nPRESENTER: \nProf. Nuhu Hatibu\, Regional Head (Tanzania\, Uganda\, and Rwanda)\, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa – AGRA \nMODERATOR: \nMr. William Brent\, Chief Communications Officer\, Power for All \nThis webinar will explore opportunities for synergies between the expansion of mini-grids and strengthening Africa’s agricultural value chains. \nLinking decentralized renewables and agriculture can provide mutually beneficial outcomes across the energy-food nexus. In particular\, renewable energy-powered technologies ranging from cold storage to solar pumps can accelerate agricultural growth and reduce food waste\, without which food import dependency in Sub-Saharan Africa will triple between now and 2025\, reaching over $110 billion. \nLeveraging complementary investments in agriculture and electricity access can yield double dividends in terms of poverty alleviation. Aligning mini grid investments with agricultural development targets can maximize joint benefits from the expansion of rural electricity access and the increase in value-added along the agricultural value chains\, both of which are directly linked to improved quality of life in rural communities. \nThe Malabo Montpellier Panel’s 2019 report Energized focuses on what six African countries – Ethiopia\, Ghana\, Morocco\, Senegal\, South Africa\, and Zambia – have done successfully in terms of institutional and policy innovation for energy expansion in support of agriculture and rural areas. Drawing on his experience\, Professor Nuhu Hatibu will discuss in this webinar the experience of Tanzania\, Uganda and Rwanda in connecting rural areas to energy. \nMore information and to register click HERE \n  \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Changing Farm Structure and Rural Transformation in Africa
DESCRIPTION:About\nPresenter: Thomas Jayne\, University Foundation Professor of Agriculture\, Food\, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University \nThe rise of medium-scale farms in Africa is affecting the region in diverse ways that are difficult to generalize. Many such farms are a source of technical change and commercialization of African agriculture; they attract agribusiness investment and improve market access conditions for all nearby smallholders. However\, medium-scale land acquisitions may exacerbate land scarcity in favorable rural areas\, raise land prices\, and crowd out young peoples’ access to land for farming. While much more research is necessary to effectively guide African governments\, our findings indicate that medium-scale commercialized farms can be a dynamic driver of agricultural transformation but this does not reduce the importance of agricultural ministries maintaining a clear commitment to supporting smallholder farms. Strengthening land tenure security of indigenous rural people to maintain land rights and support productivity investments by smallholder farm household remains crucial. \nRegister Here \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
