SUMMARY:Water\, Energy\, Food and Environment (WEFE) Nexus Autumn School
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nAround one-seventh of the world’s population lacks a secure food supply and has only limited access to clean water\, sanitation or modern energy sources. To tackle this challenge\, resources need to be managed and more integrated to avoid over-exploitation and allow more inclusive access for all. The WEFE Nexus provides an innovative framework that captures the interrelationships\, synergies\, and trade-offs between water\, energy\, and food in different environmental contexts. This Autumn School will introduce junior scholars to the interdependencies of the Nexus elements at different geographic scales (global\, basin\, national\, and local) with a focus on Africa. At each level\, the integration of the nexus elements will be investigated. \n21 – 22 October 2021 (Module 1)\n27 – 29 October 2021 (Module 2)\n04 – 06 November 2021 (Module 3)\n11 – 12 November 2021 (Module 4)\n\nKeywords: Nexus\, Water\, Energy\, Food\, Environment \nApplication Deadline: \nApplications are still possible in specific cases. If you have not yet managed to apply please write to wefe@sirop.org before September 20th. \n\n Click here to apply. \n\nFormat:\n\n\nDue to the world-wide restrictions concerning Covid-19\, IDEA League is offering this school in an online format. \n\nParticipants:\n\n\nMSc and/or PhD researchers from IDEA League or African partner universities are welcome to apply. \n\nRequirements:\n\n\n\nCurriculum vitae & publication list\nLetter of motivation\nOptional letter of recommendation\n\n\nExpenses:\n\n\nThere are no registration or tuition fees for selected participants. \n\nThe WEFE Nexus School offers students the possibility to gain a comprehensive understanding of the interconnections between water\, energy\, food and the environment and to develop new ideas for sustainable solutions. In addition to acquiring theoretical knowledge\, a focus is placed on practical solutions and case studies that enable participants to apply their knowledge and foster interdisciplinary collaboration between people from different backgrounds.  \nThe WEFE Nexus School brings together students and faculty of European and African universities for a unique learning experience. Students will benefit from the wide range of expertise and diverse perspectives on pressing challenges and emerging solutions. The diversity of case studies allows students to explore the WEFE Nexus in different geographic contexts.    \nSelected participants must attend all live sessions as outlined in the program. \n\n\nGoals: \n\n\n\nPreparing junior researchers to deal with the scarcity of resources\nUnderstanding the interrelationships between water\, energy\, food and environment\nUnderstanding the WEFE challenges and solutions at different geographical levels\nGetting introduced to different tools necessary to deal with WEFE challenges\nBringing researchers from different backgrounds to foster teamwork for solving multidisciplinary problems\n\n\nOrganizers: \n\n\nThis program is a collaboration between IDEA League member universities and the following African universities:\n\n\nUniversity of Johannesburg\nAddis Ababa University\nEduardo Mondlane University\nStellenbosch University\nUniversity of Ghana \nDetail program agenda is found here.

SUMMARY:Leapfrogging or treading water? Utilities picking up the pace at the water-energy-food nexus
DESCRIPTION:This session will look at examples of the ‘circular economy’ paradigm being adopted by water and sanitation operators in different contexts. Worldwide water operators have been implementing wastewater reclamation. A host of technological options from “high” to “low” tech and centralized to decentralized technologies exists\, but most are yet to be tested. Still\, a host of technical\, socio-cultural\, economic\, governance\, financial instruments etc. need to be understood. As such\, water reclamation with integrated resource recovery can be a key element in enhancing water\, energy and food security. Further\, visualizing revenue streams emerging from this process can form the basis for an innovative governance model geared towards more effective resource management and supporting resilience and transition to a circular economy. It will discuss how the imperative to reduce and reuse water and related energy and material resources is changing water and sanitation utilities’ modus operandi - their economic models\, structure\, governance and collaborations. The session will explore the challenges and opportunities for leaping forward. \nRegistration is required and free. \n“Click here to register”. \nThe original announcement is available here.
