We are looking for

Are you a proactive post-doc interested in the coupled challenges of biodiversity loss, climate change and food security? Are you interested in exploring how to scale up biodiversity-friendly behaviors in general, and specifically consumption and production behaviors in the food system? Are you comfortable with both quantitative and qualitative research method? Are you interested in interdisciplinary research (particularly linking economics and system thinking)? Then, you could be the ideal candidate to join our project on “scaling up biodiversity-positive food systems”.

A range of initiatives and innovations in food systems are being developed, and increasing by the day, to address the interlinked crises of biodiversity loss, climate change and food security. However, these initiatives largely remain theoretical, contested and/or niche. What is blocking innovations from scaling across the value chain from production to consumption and end of life? What makes an initiative and innovation suitable for scaling? And how can we speed up this change? What role do norms and values play in scaling up biodiversity positive food systems? What is the role for value chains, producer associations and/or the financial sector in achieving these changes?

The selected candidate will be situated in group of researchers under the investment theme “biodiversity-positive food systems” of Wageningen University & Research. The candidate will have a leading role in understanding the many barriers and enablers to scaling up and accelerating promising sustainable production initiatives. They will evaluate the potential multi-scalar outcomes this could have on biodiversity, food and other societal goals, such as climate change, livelihoods or good quality of life. The work will be grounded in two case studies and contrasting internationalized value chains of the dairy sector in the Netherlands and the cacao value chain.

You will join an international and transdisciplinary team lead by Prof. dr. Francisco Alpizar ( ENR group ),dr. Jeanne Nel ( ESG group ) and Dr. Raimon Ripoll-Bosch ( APS group ), and will be located in the Environmental Economics and Natural Resources group ( ENR ).

we ask

  • you have completed a PhD in economics, environmental economics, agricultural economics or a similar field;
  • you are interested in understanding how to shift the food system towards biodiversity positive production and consumption;
  • you want to explore the interventions that can trigger a transformation of the food system and the mechanisms through which those operate;
  • you have experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods;
  • you are a team player who can communicate clearly and comfortably with scientists, consultants and policy makers;
  • you are interested in biodiversity; cocoa and diary value chains; the financial sector;
  • For this position your command of the English language is expected to be at C1  level .
  • you have interest and demonstrable skill in publishing in renowned scientific journals.

we sacrifice

Wageningen University & Research offers excellent  terms of employment . A few highlights from our Collective Labor Agreement include:

  • there is a strong focus on vitality and you can make use of the sports facilities available on campus for a small fee;
  • a fixed December bonus of 8.3%;
  • excellent pension scheme.

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will, depending on your experience, receive a gross salary of between €3.282,- and €4.490,- for a full-time working week of 38 hours, in accordance with the  Collective Labor Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU)  (scale 10). We offer a temporary contract for 1 year which will be extended for the remaining period of the project if you perform well. The total duration of this project is 2 years.

Job description

As part of NWO project ‘Geometric Algorithms for Perpetually Changing Channel Networks in Rivers and Estuaries’, the Utrecht University is looking for an enthusiastic PhD candidate. Do you have an interest in developing into a scientific researcher? Are you enthusiastic about working with large datasets of real rivers and clever software for the analysis of complex patterns? Are you curious about scale experiments under controlled laboratory conditions?

Tidal systems such as the Ems and Scheldt estuaries and the Wadden Sea have perpetually changing channels and shoals of sand, mud and vegetation. Understanding these dynamic patterns is scientifically fascinating, and highly important for management. We integrate state-of-the-art landscape scale experiments  external linkwith computer models, field measurements, shallow coring and remote sensing observations on two planets. We explicitly address the interaction between the natural environment and human activities, such as coastal protection and nature restoration.

The NWO project ‘Geometric Algorithms for Perpetually Changing Channel Networks in Rivers and Estuaries’ aims to develop and test algorithms that recognize channels in estuaries, and connect them not only in space but also through time. You will use a large existing field data set of depth maps of the Western Scheldt estuary and collect new data in Metronome experiments under controlled laboratory conditions. These experiments are like a time machine: an entire estuary, that takes centuries to form in reality, forms before your eyes and scanners in a few weeks, and changing the formative conditions is elementary. These experiments will therefore enable you to explore the long-standing fundamental problems of equilibrium, self-organization and chaos in estuarine morphology on spatial and temporal scales that are inaccessible in field data. You will also test the algorithms to address fundamental questions about dynamics of channel junctions, emergent network properties and the propagation of disturbances through the channel networks. The latter is of immediate societal relevance, since disturbances are mainly induced by dredging and dumping for shipping fairway maintenance. You will be part of a collaborative project team, led by Prof Bettina Speckmann of TU Eindhoven and Prof Maarten Kleinhans of Utrecht University.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • a MSc degree, or equivalent, in complexity science, earth science, physical geography, civil engineering or another closely related research field;
  • demonstrable enthusiasm for experimentation and working with large datasets;
  • affinity with numerical modelling of river/estuarine morphodynamics will be an asset;
  • the willingness and flexibility to work in multi-disciplinary teams of scientists, specialist programmers and lab techno-wizards;
  • English oral and writing skills; you should be able to demonstrate English language proficiency. We require a qualification English at C1 level (comparable to level 3 of the Lecturer Assessment Grid) or you should be willing to obtain this level by training;
  • gardening skills, technical skills or artistic skills are welcomed.

Offer

You will be offered a PhD position (0.8 – 1.0 FTE), initially for one year with an extension to a total of four years upon a successful assessment in the first year, and with the specific intent that it results in a doctorate within this period. The gross salary ranges between €2,443 in the first year and €3,122 in the fourth year of employment (scale P according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment.

Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions  external link (multiple choice model). More information about working at Utrecht University  external linkcan be found here.

Office/Unit/Project Description

1) Organizational Context

UNDP is the knowledge frontier organization for sustainable development in the UN Development System and serves as the integrator for collective action to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNDP’s policy work carried out at HQ, Regional and Country Office levels, forms a contiguous spectrum of deep local knowledge to cutting-edge global perspectives and advocacy. In this context, UNDP invests in the Global Policy Network (GPN), a network of field-based and global technical expertise across a wide range of knowledge domains and in support of the signature solutions and organizational capabilities envisioned in the Strategic Plan.

2) UNDP’s work on Energy and the Sustainable Energy Hub

UNDP has been a leading advocate and the largest UN implementing agency for the energy transition at global, regional and national levels for several decades. UNDP’s Energy Programme supports policy makers with high quality data to make informed decisions on selecting and designing cost-effective public instruments to promote private investment in clean energy, contributing to SDG 7 and in line with UNDP’s ‘signature solution’ on energy. UNDP has a successful track record in using policy instruments to de-risk and catalyze investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy access projects, including a series of sustainable energy initiatives specifically adapted to the needs (and resilient recovery) of fragile and crisis-impacted countries.

Under the new Strategic Plan (2022-2025), energy is one of UNDP’s six signature solutions – alongside poverty and inequality, governance, resilience, environment, and gender equality – to support countries towards three directions of change: structural transformation, leaving no one behind and resilience. Scaled-up programming efforts on energy access and the energy transition will be coordinated under the newly established Sustainable Energy Hub (SEH), which represents parts of the organization’s systematic and programmatic approach to respond to the energy and climate change agendas. As per UNDP’s new Strategic Plan 2022-2025, the first objective of UNDP is increasing energy access for those furthest behind. By speeding up investment in distributed renewable energy solutions, especially for those hardest to reach and in crisis contexts, it aims to increase access to clean and affordable energy for 500 million people by the year 2025. The Africa Minigrids Programme, for example, is improving the financial viability of renewable energy mini-grids in 18 countries, encouraging private investment, lower tariffs and expanded service.

Second, UNDP will work to accelerate the clean energy transition and access through systems changes that support inclusive, green and resource-efficient economies. This work will capitalize on technological gains, clean energy innovations and new business models in the energy sector.

Through the Sustainable Energy Hub, UNDP will harness networks, experience and innovation to scale-up energy programming efforts and shape policy, building on the existing portfolio of energy projects, covering over 100 countries to harness clean energy and support the energy access and transition as well as on UNDP’s Climate Promise, UNDP’s Sustainable Finance Hub and UNDP’s Digital offer. UNDP will also work with Governments in programme countries as they recover and build forward better from COVID-19 and with investors to unlock and harness public and private finance to power progress towards multiple SDGs.

Finally, recognizing that change will be disruptive, UNDP will strive to ensure that such transitions are just, and that their impact on vulnerable people is understood and duly mitigated.

3) Background on Regional Engagement

To provide country support and work with relevant teams for local action, the Sustainable Energy Hub is structured to work in close contact with UNDP’s Regional Hubs (i.e., Africa, Asia Pacific, Arab States/Middle East & North Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Europe and Central Asia). Therefore, the Regional Energy Specialist will be located at the Regional Centre to which he/she applies.

The Regional Energy Specialist will work closely with  the Regional Team Leaders for Nature, Climate and Energy and other regional specialists in the regional team to advance the sustainable energy agenda, while engaging with country offices in the region and enabling strategic partnerships with regional organizations and partner UN agencies. Therefore, working closely with other regional specialists, the Specialist will provide policy and programme support to: (1) de-risk energy investments; (2) scale up energy finance; (3) promote innovation, technology, and data for sustainable energy, (4) enable SDGs through an inclusive, just energy transition, (5) advance energy access and transition policies and the enabling policy environment e.g. on carbon pricing, energy auditsand fossil fuel subsidy reform; and (6) expand energy access for poor and displaced communities, among other activities.

Based in one of UNDP’s Regional Hubs, the Regional Energy Specialist will be supervised by the Regional Team Leader for the NCE Team (primary supervisor). The person will also work closely with the Director of the Sustainable Energy Hub in UNDP Headquarters (secondary supervisor).
