About this Research Topic:

Today, the growing world population has resulted in a surging demand on food, water resources, energy and technological development. Projections of the future water, energy, and food demands show an exponential rising trend, while a series of the available natural resources could be significantly deteriorated via environmental degradation, pollution and climate change, with substantial burdens on the social, economic, and environmental implications. Circular economy and nexus approach are novel concepts in the realm of the sustainability discourse. While circular economy has been devoted to removing waste and pollution through reducing, reusing, recycling and recovery of resources, the nexus approach has been structured to waste minimization and efficiency improvement by focusing on the inter-linkages between resource management. The transition from a linear to a circular economy requires a joint effort by stakeholders from different sectors. Within this context, circular economy has been highlighted to be a key driver for addressing the unique relationships between the sectors of water-food-energy nexus, mainly by:

  • Realigning the domestic, agricultural, and industrial discharges with the natural water cycle;
  • Improving water use efficiency by pursuing all possibilities of water treatment, recycling or reuse, specifically via the exploration of sustainable environmental management systems related to natural water, food and energy courses, implementation of new emerging soilless cultivation technologies and renewable energy resources application;
  • Establishing health risk and hazard assessment guidelines for environmental preservation and public health protection;
  • Policies review related to water, food and energy management strategies, and smart partnerships;
  • Implementing better resources allocation.

This Research Topic will focus on the smart management of water, food, environmental resources, and energy or their nexus towards successive achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research work, fundamental findings or comprehensive reviews with scientific outputs addressing the SDGs are of paramount importance.

This Research Topic welcomes submissions related, but not limited, to:

  • Identification, detection, characterization, and remediation of environmental pollutants of emerging concern;
  • Integrated management of water, food, energy or environmental resources;
  • Nanotechnologies and green treatment techniques;
  • New emerging environmental management systems and the built environment;
  • Restoration of the natural ecosystem and public health improvement;
  • Environmental risk, bio-accumulative hazards, water or food safety, and toxicity;
  • Techno-economic studies of environmental pollutants treatment and reuse;
  • Water, food, energy or environmental policies related to sustainable development;
  • Treatment, reduce, recycling and reuse of water, food, bioresources or energy;
  • Implementing concept of waste to wealth;
  • Water-Food nexus, Water-Energy nexus, Food-Energy or Water-Food-Energy nexus;
  • Environmental resources management strategies related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Context

The impacts of climate change are being increasingly felt around the globe, often more intense than what was anticipated just a few years ago. There is a growing consensus that the next few years are the last window of opportunity to steer the world in a better and safer direction and avoid the worst consequences of climate change. The scale and ambition of the climate challenge require new ways of thinking and working – across sectors and thematic silos. Achieving sustainable development in countries across the globe will furthermore require innovative forms of social engagement, along with new and improved technologies and collaborative mechanisms.

In this context, science-based participatory approaches are much needed to provide hope and direction. The climate academy programme aspires to address these challenges through a series of dedicated events. The “People’s Pathways to Climate Action – Climate Academy” 2022 will have a special focus on digitalization and energy transition and their application in facilitating climate action. Young professionals, including academics, policy makers and practitioners are invited to apply between 27 April and 22 May 2022.

Apply to receive up to US $50,000 in equity-free funding, mentorship and access to the world’s largest humanitarian organization.

Last year, the United Nations World Food Programme launched its first regional innovation hub in Eastern Africa. Now, the hub is kicking off its flagship WFP IGNITE Food Systems Challenge in partnership with the USAID Bureau for Humanitarian Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, implemented by Outbox in search of game-changing ventures contributing to stronger, more sustainable food systems Uganda.

30.4 million people are currently facing severe food insecurity in Eastern Africa. The main drivers of high levels of food and nutrition insecurity are conflict/insecurity, climatic shocks, macro-economic instability and COVID-19. This suggests that existing food systems — all elements involved in the production, distribution, consumption, loss or waste of food products that originate from agriculture — are not meeting the needs of all people. We have seen that some food systems can easily be disrupted by climate shocks, COVID-19 and violent conflict. Even in stable environments, people have limited access to nutritious food because of geographic isolation, socioeconomic inequalities, or weak commercial markets.

This challenge celebrates Ugandan entrepreneurs who are thinking outside of the box to redesign regional food systems in service of people and the planet. We are looking for startups, SMEs and cooperatives contributing towards food security in areas such as resilience to shocks and stress, access to safe and nutritious food, optimizing regional food supply chains, empowering smallholder farmers, and advancing food security for all.

Applications can be submitted until 21st May 2022 at 11:59 pm (EAT).

Thematic Area: Nexus WEFE

Topic:

1.4.1-2022 (IA) Predicting and testing options of socio-economic adaptation to declining Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) resources in the Mediterranean Region

Type of Action:(IA) Innovation and Action

Total Indicative Amount Allocated To This Call:  EUR 6.2 million

Opening Date:  17 Jan, 2022

Deadline:

Stage 1 Pre-proposals – 15 March, 2022 (17:00h Central European Time (CET)
Stage 2 Full proposals – 6 September, 2022 (17:00h Central European Time (CET)

Status: Open

Challenges:

Climate change and population growth projections are on a collision path in the Mediterranean Region. Concern on how long continuing along this path can be sustained is growing. The combined action of these drivers will impinge on water availability, energy consumption, agricultural productivity and ecosystem health:

  • Water is the medium through which the consequences of climate change extremes – droughts and flash floods – are directly felt by people
  • Cooling needs of thermo electric generation may no longer be met, thus making the grid unable to supply households and industries with the required power
  • Higher seasonal temperatures can significantly impact agricultural productivity by increasing evaporative water losses and the heat stress on crops
  • Mediterranean ecosystems are likely to be pushed past critical thresholds and altered in an unprecedented way, thus degrading their capacity to deliver services to society.

Beyond immediate or delayed effects on the biophysical state of Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems resources, which have been considered in previous PRIMA calls, the focus of this call will be on the socio-economic impacts of a Nexus approach to the governance of WEFE resources. The livelihood insecurity and inequalities deriving from local resource scarcity in the Mediterranean Region might be push factors for the internal displacement of populations into nearby urban centres. This is especially true in rural areas where the farming-based livelihoods of smallholders are more likely to be affected. Where not well managed, urbanisation can create other challenges, including human health and the labour market, change in consumption patterns, loss of traditions and culture. Agriculture may take a back seat and be unable to cope with mounting pressure on rural hinterlands for food provision amid an increasing dependency on food crop import.  At the same time, local employment, better health, improvement of life standard, income development and community development can be achieved by the proper usage of energy. Cross-sectoral (Nexus) policy actions striking a balance between the competing goals of the water, energy, food and ecosystem sectors are needed now as a precondition to prompt adaptation of the Mediterranean supply systems of WEFE resources safe net against projected changes and rise of inequality.

Scope:

The call supports the development of strategies and policies that boost populations’ capacity to adapt to dwindling Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) resources in the Mediterranean Region. As declining WEFE resources tends to emerge slowly over time, making a connection with socio-economic impacts is not immediately distinguishable from acute events. Given the need to plan for the future in the present, early identification of causal connections between socio-economic impacts and measures to build local resilience of WEFE resource management is necessary. To this end, proposals should be built around Nexus demonstration cases as socio-innovative adaptation experiments in different contexts. By analysing WEFE production and consumption structures, proposals should identify their impacts on the life-supporting abilities and local communities’ social and economic performance under climate change and demographic constraints. Actions would address the interplay of impacts, for example, of disruption of regional and international trade flows of food crops, on people’s displacement. In particular, actions could explore the associations between the trading of crop products and local usages of water, energy, ecosystem resources under different scenarios. Specific methodologies are necessary for the co-development in a participatory approach of transformative Nexus solutions as a potential strategy of people’s adaptation to the intensification of resource scarcity. Outcomes should then be translated into WEFE resource-related indicators to monitor these strategies’ qualitative and quantitative impacts and provide hints for possible futures. This would enable feedback to decision-makers to develop Nexus policies and strategies, ensuring a long-lasting adaptation capacity of potentially vulnerable populations.

Extensive involvement of stakeholders and right holders is necessary to make projects also social innovative experiments. The project’s evaluation will emphasise explicit KPIs to ensure quantifiable outcomes. The project proponents should identify potential synergies with other PRIMA, H2020 and Horizon Europe projects. The successful consortia should take part in the Mediterranean WEFE Nexus Community of Practice created as an outcome of the WEFE Science Advances Conference to stimulate cross-organisation collaboration and knowledge sharing in the Mediterranean Region.

Expected impacts:

  • Integration of Nexus considerations into public and business decision-making at different governance levels through innovative toolboxes and guidelines supporting policymakers and practitioners in the implementation of adaptation strategies
  • Increase resilience to climate change, ensuring good quantitative and qualitative status of water, sustainable agriculture, food and energy production, and healthy ecosystems
  • Increase the socio-economic livelihood conditions of vulnerable populations
  • Share best Nexus practices across disciplinary silos in a context of combined natural, economic and social systems

Key Performance Indicators:

  • Degree of integration between water related policies, such as environmental, climate, agriculture and energy policies
  • Number of stakeholders involved in innovative experiments
  • Number of Nexus demonstration cases as socio-innovative adaptation experiments in different contexts

Links with EU Policies, HE Mission’s and partnerships:

The proposal should indicate linkages to relevant EU policies and objectives in the context of the European Green Deal, Water Framework Directive (WFD) and relevant Horizon Europe Missions and Partnerships
